A game of learning the important skills in the job search process.


You're Hired! helps students learn important skills in the job search process, especially filling out applications and interviewing. Players take on the role of the employer, the manager of a convenience store. In the first stage of the game, they review applications for the job of assistant manager.

Since they do not have time to interview all applicants, they must choose which applicants to interview on the basis of the applications. It is a powerful learning tool, because the students themselves discover the value and characteristics of good applications by their decisions in the game. In the second stage of the game, players interview the remaining applicants.

How To Play

In order to win the game, players have to think critically and evaluate each candidate's strengths and limitations in relation to the demands of the job. Players will look for and find positive actions, as well as problems and mistakes that the applicants make both in filling out the application and in the interview. The players will then reject the applicants who have made the mistakes or who have serious limitations.

  • Learn basic information about the selection process.
  • Learn some commonly used terms in business and applying for a job.
  • Develop insight into how the applications affect the chances of being asked for an interview.
  • Develop insight into how the answers to interview questions affect the chances of being hired for a job.
  • Develop empathy for the position of the "employer" and understand how applicant actions affect his/her decision on whom to hire.
